Tampa Bay, Florida-The Tampa Bay Devil Rays baseball franchise has been the laughing stock of baseball for almost a decade, always trying to get the youngest players and keep as low a payroll as possible. This year, with a new GM, the D-Rays have a new philosiphy. Do what it takes to win.
New GM Josh did not wait to make a splash, as he traded for stud SP Roy Halladay and stud CL Brad Lidge for two prospects, Evan Longoria and B.J. Upton. Both prospects have very bright futures, but the D-Rays have made it clear they want to win now. 15 days later, Tampa Bay acuired monster CF Carlos Beltran for slumping Carl Crawford and a declining Rocco Balldeli, as well as young outfielder Elijah Dukes. Beltran provides power and speed to an already stacked Florida offense.
The Devil Rays are leading the league in runs scored, but are last in the league in runs allowed. GM Josh is trying to trade the excess hitting for starting and relief pitching. He also said that he is not afraid to move more prospects. Rumored to be on his block is the batting average challenged DH Johnny Gomes. Although Gomes won't win you a batting tittle, he has incredible power.
The trainers room at Tropicana Field has not been a peaceful sight this season. Among current injured players are Carlos Beltran, Roy Halladay, Jorge Cantu, Scott Kazmir, Delmon Young, Akinori Iwamura. Those players have one thing in common, and that is that they all will be back sometime in 2007. Devil Rays RF Damon Hollins will never get to play profesional baseball again, after a severly torn hamstring muscle. Hollins was popular and well liked in the clubhouse, and will be desperately missed by his teammates and great fans in Tampa.
